What We Caught on Camera by Heather Sager

The morning of that odd day,

we caught the skunk on video camera.

The flowing-coated skunk

danced across our lawn.

Its black-and-white form ran

near the fire hydrant,

tore up grass.

Pawed grubs into wide-open mouth.

Then the skunk wiggled.

While it was running across the street,

toward us,

the skunk bounced with happiness.

We laughed.

We laughed until it disappeared

into the neighbor’s dark green reef

of a shrub.

With our eyes,

we caught joy that day.

Heather Sager writes poetry and fiction. Her most recent poems appear in Skipjack Review, Haight Ashbury Literary Journal, SLAB, The Kleksograph, and elsewhere.
